Hi all, The magic system is actually partially based on a PNP magic system that Jeremy Greene and I started working on about 10 years ago. It was about 3 years in development and testing. I liked aspects of it a lot... so, I figured using a parser and a state machine I might make it so at least some of the creative aspects of spell casting might be implemented on a computer. In my game system mana was actually called Wyrd Force... I think that most people relate to the word MANA so, that is what we use. Given that you can learn magical techniques as new skills that you can spend XP on to increase. You specify what forces you wish to use, how you wish to use them, what you are targetting, a shape possibly, and where you are getting the power from. I might cast a spell such as FF10MM5TE in my old system which looks really dull. So, I had already written up a proposed method for making these things be represented by archaic sounding sylablles so the spell comes out with no numbers and looks like an incantation. If it can be pulled off like I intended then you will be able to set trigger spells, tap into area power sources, draw mana from items, over cast, and under cast, and do much more. How much Lanthar is intending on implementing I cannot say. If he does it all then that was my intention. Since we are both programmers we both have our own approaches on what we think would work. I told him simply if it works the way he is doing it then that is fine and I will be happy. I may help him some and will definately give ideas and expand upon the magic system. I would be 100% working on this with him but, I have people demanding NPC PROFESSIONS which I am troubleshooting the alpha release now. I also have a big module, and a large scripting package to release. The idea of this magic system was actually my VERY FIRST scripting idea for NWN back in July of 2002... but, I quickly found out there were a lot of things needed for it that were not available. Many of them have since been made available. Others have work arounds. The big problem was module wide listening. Lanthar has that fixed using NWNX so, I sent him information on the magic system. I have more to send still...

Okay Deva... I've begun the caster code. You will probably dislike this, and I admit it is evil, but I'm working on making it use a bitswitched combo to fire off a given spell with a specific combination of forces and methods. If a given combo is not in the switch/case, then it becomes a combination of set results for each value given... This results in 2^27 possible combinations of forces. Repeating a force has no effect... also, the mana becomes useless in the predefined spells, so I will simply add all mana used and make that into a damage value of some kind. Note that I'm having Chass make duplicates of all the spells for me, and I will then alter these to duplicate the existing nwn spells. Also, variations in mana amounts may result in the casting of different spells.

Hey lan how is this system coming along? As you know I am going to be restarting the mage guild and was curious if I could use this system with some of the epic mages.

Hmmm....yes, this interests me, too. I miss the good old days of running around yelling things like "In Por Ylem" and "Vas Ylem Rel". My only questions, which were "sorta" answered, are: 1. Will this mean a "mana pool" will be visually incorporated, or will players be responsible for keeping track of their own "go go juice?" 2. Will this override the typical "spells memorized" lists of normal NWN? Either way...it'll be cool to see.

Is this going to have an independant level tracking system like CNR instead of class level association?
