This thread is for talk about the magic system. I'll post more about it later, but for now, suffice to say that it is currently to be based on work by Deva Winblood, though I may switch to methods in the Spellbound D20 addition.

Things are moving along smoothly... Deva's CPU decided to melt a little, but just finished rebuilding the machine, and should be here shortly...

Will this system supplement, replace, or "just" add color to the present one?

This adds an alternative system of magic to the game. Spoken syllables will combine to make unique on the fly spells which work off a continually refreshing mana... I'm progressing nicely on this... I should have a working prototype by the end of the week... fiance notwithstanding... -Lanthar

Does drinking wine raise your Mana?

Okay... that threw me for a second. Not continually refreshing and crisp... but a continually recharging amount of mana per player.

Hmm.... I guess this isn't as well known as I thought.
The concept of Mana is taken from the Bible of the Christian religion. Jesus asked for food and then God gave him mana (or something like that) which is where the mana idea originates. In many Gothic RPG's magic users, priests and sometimes just general people have mystical powers fuled by mana and they can recharge their mana by drinking wine (because it symbolizes the blood of Jesus) or praying at an altar or other Symbol (a sword planted into the ground counts as a cross).

Big news: The parser is now functional. I now begin the process of building the caster functions.

But mana in the bible is most akin to ice cream... being a rich energy filled edible substance that melted with the dawn...
anyway...
Mana regens at a rate based on con and other factors...

Ok so explain this to me in a easy language. You are making a system so we can cast spells by saying the right words?

A couple more questions (I'm obviously stiill not clear on the concept),
1) can a say, an arcane spell caster, cast spell the old way and the new way? It sounds like the spell list would be different as you can get novel effects. May even throw out the concept of a spell list for the new system.
2) Can any character class use the new system?
3) Is mana going to be level, charateristic, class, or practice dependent? Or some combination of them? Will recharte rates be variable? If so dependent on what?
I can see how you might not want some of this to be public info ;0 so PLS indicate that.

Well, basically there are syllables for element, method, target type, and shape... and you mix and match to get the effect you want. Also you specify how much mana to use. Initially, I'll provide a training area that grants huge amounts of mana to try out spells... So that people can try it all out.
Decisions on which classes can use the system have yet to be defined... as do the mana usage amounts, and other settings that will need tweaking until the system is balanced.
Mana will recharge based on CON, but you can also use mana granting items, and vampiric style mana theft from other creatures...

This is going to be very interesting. I suspect that it will be quite a few months before you are happy with the balance and feel of it. I can see a whole bunch of options based on how you view your world. Everything form everybody has mana to only the traditional magic using classes and then there are the different races. It makes Con a prime characteristic for a mana using magic user. Leads to some interesting multiclass potentials....Have to start thinking about a charater for it now.....

Same here.. I've been watching the development of this system for quite some time.. it's VERY interesting to me. I can picture it now... hehe
This will no doubt bring in some players.
Keep up the good work!

So by when you say element, method, shape and target type do you mean that we can make an ice like fireball? Iceball?
