Isis sat at the edge of the cliff, chin resting on her knees. The village below was peaceful in the early morning sunshine. She sighed, thinking about her recent trials. The journey through the Vast had been…exhilarating. She learned so much in such a short amount of time. She smiled at the thought of her ability to conjure portals from will alone, much as the magi do in this realm.
But the nightmares…those she could have done without. She could not stop imagining the look on her ‘dream mother’ when she confronted her. And the feeling of pulling that sword out of her mother’s belly, blood cooling on the stone floor of the cave…it was freeing…At the time. Now it is confusing and troubling.
“You look troubled my daughter.” Isis glared over her shoulder at the Erinyes, Vira, remaining silent. “Oh, don’t give me that look. You are safe from my ministrations here. Besides, he doesn’t wish to buy you anymore. You, my girl, are too hard to handle.”
Isis shook her head, “How comforting.”
Vira sat gingerly on the grass behind Isis and absently began to run her fingers through the long blue locks, “Stubborn girl. I am simply doing what I was created to do. Now if you would only do the same.”
She kept her gaze on the port below, “You said yourself – I am hard to handle. Thus, I am stubborn and headstrong.”
Vira sighed. She began to braid Isis’ hair slowly, “My Master has heard some interesting rumors about you my dear.”
Isis glared at the Erinyes out of the corner of her eyes, “Oh grow up Isis. You know very well what I am and where my loyalties lie. I haven’t changed and I doubt I will be changing any time in the near future.” She continued to braid Isis’ hair calmly. “So, about these rumors…something about interesting new abilities.”
Isis thingyed an eyebrow and snorts, “Ah, mother. I have missed your dancing around the subject.”
Vira smiled, “Then you know what I ask and I do not have to elaborate further.”
Isis shrugged, “Yes, I have developed new abilities. Weak ones. Nothing that he would be interested in.”
“I believe that the rumors stated that you had developed psconic abilities, nothing to scoff at. Perhaps that is exactly what he wants.” Isis’ jaw clenched. “Now, tell me more about these interesting new talents.”
She shrugged, “Nothing spectacular. I can conjure pathways through the Vast. As you already heard I have weak Psonic powers here. Nothing that would be of use to your master.”
Vira smirked in triumph, “Oh, I think Master will want you back very badly when he finds that out.” She chuckled deeply and pulled a jewled band to secure the braid.
Before it could touch Isis’ hair she had drawn the dagger on her thigh and had it at Vira’s throat. “I wouldn’t mother.”
“What? I was merely…” Isis didn’t move her dagger and gave Vira a scornful look. She shrugged, “It was worth a try. Master wanted me to try to make you easy to find. Now I can go to him with a clean conscience.”
Isis rolled her eyes, “You and I have different definitions of clean conscience.”
Vira grinned and used the leather band Isis handed to her. Once finished, she stood and stretched, looking around “While it is always lovely to speak with you daughter. I have other things to attend to.” She waves absently then disappears.
Isis stared at the spot her mother disappeared for several moments. Finally, she stood, stretched her wings and flew down to the meadow below. She felt the need to have someone dispel whatever her mother had done while touching her hair.
