i've tried everything i can find and everything i can think of short getting rid of the router and plugging the computer directly into the dsl modem. this dmz thing isn't even working which from what i understand is supposed to forward all ports to one computer.
Any other suggestions, or do i just have to wait till i can aford a new router?

This may sound crazy to some, but try to hear me out as I'm a network admin, and I've actually had experience with software firewalls. In particular, Norton's Internet Security has given us much grief. It seems that "disabling" the firewall, doesn't always work. We've had multiple computers have problems with connectivity even after disabling it (trouble with VPN clients, etc.).
If you have the installation media available for re-installing after this, try testing without Norton's IS by completely removing it from your system. (Add/Remove Programs will work fine.)
As always with trying to troubleshoot a problem, the less variables involved, the better.
Another thing you can do to help diagnose your problem is to load a protocol analyzer (packet sniffer) to see if you have all of the ports that the game is trying to use open on your firewall. For this, I suggest Ethereal (http://www.ethereal.com/). It is an open source project that has been around for quite some time (stable, trustworthy), and they have Windows ports available. You will first need to install the WinPcap library (http://winpcap.mirror.ethereal.com/install/default.htm), but unlike most Windows software installations, this shouldn't require a reboot.
Good luck.

Thanks i'll give it a shot.
any sugestions on what to replace norton with. My subscription recently ran out and i'm not inclined to renew it.
Deffenatly making progress. Looks like norton was the main problem. I was able to connect to the server via my external address with the router running in dmz mode. it's not posting in game spy, but direct connect works.
now i need to see if i can get the port forwarding thing to wrok. i really don't like running in DMZ mode.

If your behind your hardware firewall, then why not just don't add a software one? I don't run any software firewalls and my router protects me just fine. Its a matter of how safe you want to feel i suppose. In the day we used to use a good soft firewall called ice or softice blackice (something like that). I dont think its made anymore but it was free and good back then.

my understanding is that running in DMZ mode disables the hardware firewall. so i'd need a software one for this computer
I guess it dosn't really matter becouse i can't seem to connect to the server now. I'm about ready to throw the whole d**n thing out.

I'm sure it is something simple just frustrating. Try it without the router. I'll be in the Tech support chat area for awhile.

allright, i've used the packet sniffer. But i don't know what to do with the information now. I connected once using the external ip address, but havn't been able to since.
i actually removed the router and plugged my computer directly into the dsl modem, and i still couldn't host a game.
I feel like i'm banging my head against a wall here. I'f anyone wants to give it a shot i'll set up a logmein account for this computer. Other wise i'm quitting before i take a baseball bat to this stupid thing.
Really, this shouldn't be that difficult, should it?

Allright, i've compleatly removed the router. connected my computer straight to the dsl modem (a windows 2000 machine). I've got the dedicated server running. is there any reason i shouldn't be able to connect with the client from this same computer?

I've diescoverd the source of the problem after my second call to my isp. Turns out my dsl modem has a built in firewall that can not be modified. Thankyou Microsoft.
so unless anyone knows a way around this unforseen glitch, look like i'll need to buy a new modem before i can host.
