well the modem wasnt made by MS, that much i can tell you. they make software, not hardware. Anyway, i would recommend a Linksys modem/router combo in one. i use one and its great.

well, it's the modem that was sent to me when i signed up with msn, i assume they were the ones that chose it. so i'm still blaming them.
When i can afford to, i'll get a new one.

I stand corrected. MS seems to make some or brand someone elses product as MS.
Then i have to fall back on the home gear i know from personal touch. Linksys, DLink are most common and i an not aware of any known issues from the Linksys side. Modems and routers.

Sounds like a huge hassle for a "might" work. why not just get a new modem/router? Anyway good luck but i could not find the app to save my life. found it talked about but no one, not even the referred tech site seemed to know of that unit.

it is a huge hassel, but i can't justify spending $80 for a game right now. Thanks for looking around for me. I just thought i'd mentioned it here on the chance that someone knew where to get it.

Here is a linksys modem for $55 (free shipping) and $35 after $20 mail in rebate. i like my linksys modem. i have the modem and router and have no issues with either. Now keep in mind this is just the modem, so if you need a router also for more than 1 pc in home. thats additional cost. www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16825120101

Actually i flashed it and got it to work. Now i just need to figure out the settings so i can host.
Anyone know how to get NWN through two routers?
I've managed to host a game by removing my router and connecting directly to the modem in dmz mode. Now i just need to figure out how to add the router.

If you are trying to play through a firewall of some sort, here is some information for you to help you get connected. Neverwinter Nights uses UDP, not TCP for its connections. If you think that your firewall is preventing you from connecting to the game servers, please make sure that the following ports are open: * Ports 5120 through 5300 * Port 6500 * Port 27900 * Port 28900 In addition to opening the ports listed above, you may need to allow incoming connections on the port you are running your server on (5121 by default) and forward those connections to the computer running the server. Check out www.portforward.com for detailed configuration instructions for most common brands of router. (note: not affiliated nor supported by BioWare Corp. or Atari) If you have multiple computers behind a firewall and you want to play multiplayer with 2 or more of them at the same time, you must ensure the Client Port setting for each computer is set to a different value. You will find this entry in the file nwnplayer.ini Simply double click on it to open it, and look for the Client Port= line in the [Profile] section. Change this from the default value of 5120 on each machine. You have to stay in a certain range, so use numbers like 5121, 5122, 5123, etc. If your server does not appear on the GameSpy game list: 1. Verify that it is does not appear for other users. It may not be appearing for you because your game is published by your external IP address, this address may not be valid from inside your firewall. 2. Verify that the server is accessible from the Internet, have a friend Direct Connect using your external IP address (ie not 127.0.0.1 or 192.168.*.*, these are local addresses). 3. If you are starting your module from the command line of the Windows or Linux dedicated server, try starting it from within the application. 4. If your module is very large or contains very large areas, try breaking it up into smaller pieces. If you are wanting to make sure that your NAT is set up to allow the game to play here are some details. Outgoing packets * Source port: 5120-5129 * Destination port: 5121-5300 Incoming packets * Source port: 5121-5300 * Destination port: 5120-5129 On the Game Client side, here are some changes to make things go better. Go to your nwnplayer.ini file in your Neverwinter Nights install directory, and find the following section: [Profile] Client Port=XXXX Our suggestion is to change XXXX to 5120.

this came from the bioware forums, right? I think i can almost recite it by heart. Unfortunatly it dosen't do me a lot of good, considering i don't know how to do all that stuff with my equipment. If i go to portforward is just tells me that i am unable to open enough ports on both my router and my modem and that i should run them in dmz mode. Allright, my modem works fine in DMZ mode if it's connect directly to one computer i can host that way. Add the router and i run into problems.
Ok so my set up is modem - router - computer.
if i am running my modem in dmz mode do i use the ip address of the router, or of my server?
Also if i am running a dedicated server on one machine, should i be able to connect to it with my external ip address from another computer on the lan? or do i need to find someone outside the network to try to connect to it?

#1 why have 2 routers connected? Not a good config. #2 I read you saying you took the router out of the equation, pc to modem direct. Is this correct? If so, just put 1 router in between modem and pc's. Setup all the ports to forward as directed (keep 2nd router out of mix) and if the router is a Linksys, i don't get any errors about running out of port forwarding capabilites, so you shouldn't either. #3 In a Lan with a router environment, you should be able to go either Lan /direct connect OR internet/direct connect. Lan means using the inside address assigned by router or your static you setup. ie... 192.168.1.100:5124 Using the internet address should just send the packets to the router interface and back to the other pc via 24.24.100.55 (just an example internet address)
Outside of this, i can't offer any more advice than to repeat... get new router/modem combo that works as you need. Good luck

my modem acts as router, but it only has one connector. so i have to connect it to another router so i can connect 3 computers to it. That's why i say i have to go through two routers, the modem is technically a router, although i can only hook one computer directly to it.

It sounds like you are basically running into a dual-NAT (Network Address Translation) situation. These can be very complicated, and are normally overly complicated for what you need. Using two devices in DMZ mode is over redundant. The only reason for doing this would be to protect the network on the inside of the second device (in your case, the inside of the router) from the devices on the outside of the second device (which would be anything on the inside of your modem). This configuration allows multiple points of failure in network connectivity (remember, the less variables, the better). I have downloaded the user manual ( www.smc.com/files/AZ/7401BRA_MN_European_E_vers1.pdf) for the firmware that you flashed onto the MSN DSL1000 modem to make it work like an SMC7401BRA modem. It now has all the capabilities that your router has, with the added benefit of being an ADSL modem. I would suggest buying a simple device such as a hub or a non-managed switch ( www.mwave.com/mwave/viewspec.hmx?scriteria=1255749) to use to connect multiple computers to the inside of your modem. You can then setup the port-forwarding features on the "Virtual server" configuration screen of your modem to direct incoming traffic on the server ports to your server. Believe me, simplicity in networking is bliss. Good luck.

thank you very much! I think i'm might actually have a switch lying around.
From what i understand from your post if i use a switch instead of the router, i'll only need to configure the modem.
Swapped the router with a hub and that did the trick. along with flashing the modem back to an older version of the firmware. It's even showing up on gamespy. Thanks for all your help.
